What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is an injectable prescription medicine that may help adults with obesity, or with excess weight (overweight) who also have weight-related medical problems, lose weight and keep it off. What is Mounjaro used for?
Mounjaro is used for weight loss accompanied by a balanced diet and regular exercise. It is typically used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity. This drug is prescribed if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It can also be prescribed if you have a lower BMI of 27, along with certain medical conditions such as asthma or high blood pressure. The active ingredient reduces your appetite, helps fight cravings and slows gut motility helping you to eat less.
How does Mounjaro work?
(glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) agonists. These work by mimicking the effects of a naturally occurring hormone in the body which helps regulate sugar levels and increase the amount of energy used by the body. This reduces cravings, and the feeling of hunger and makes you feel full faster and for longer, making you eat less and helping you lose weight.
Mounjaro is a weekly weight loss injection that contains Tirzepatide, a substance that activates two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) that reduce appetite and slow down digestion. Tirzepatide can help people lose weight and keep it off when combined with diet and exercise is more effective than other GLP-1’s on their own.

How to use Mounjaro for weight loss in the UK?
Mounjaro UK comes in a Kwik pen device which contains 4 weekly doses. Mounjaro is administered once weekly at any time of the day, with or without meals. It is to be injected in the fatty tissue, just under the skin, in either the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. The injection site can be changed.
Please read the instructions included in the package leaflet carefully when you use Mounjaro for weight loss treatments. Mounjaro should be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
The starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5mg once weekly. The dose should be increased every 4 weeks over 16 weeks to a maintenance dose of up to 15 mg once weekly depending on tolerability and effectiveness. The maintenance dose of 15 mg once weekly provides the greatest weight loss, however, if you are unable to tolerate a higher dose you may continue on a lower tolerated dose.
Mounjaro alternatives
Mounjaro is a UK weight loss injection like Wegovy. It is also a once-weekly treatment that acts on GLP-1 receptors to help reduce appetite and cravings.
Orlistat capsules are another type of weight loss treatment that has been approved for losing weight in the UK. Colloquially known as “fat loss pills”, these work by reducing the absorption of fat in your gut.
Who is Mounjaro not suitable for?
Do not use Mounjaro weight loss injections if:
• You are under 18
• You or any of your family have ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
• You are allergic to tripeptide or other ingredients in Mounjaro
You are pregnant or breastfeeding - This weight loss injection is not suitable for anyone pregnant or planning pregnancy. You must leave a gap of at least 2 months between trying for pregnancy and using weight loss injections.
Before using these weight loss injections, consult your doctor if you have medical conditions related to your pancreas or kidneys. Patients having type 2 diabetes and those who have had diabetic retinopathy in the past need to talk to their doctor to discuss suitability. Those who have been diagnosed with mental health issues or have been through them previously need to speak to their doctor before using any weight loss injections including Mounjaro.

Doseage
Mounjaro is a once weekly injection treatment for weightloss. Each pen contains 4 doses. The starting dose is 2.5mg which you take for atleast 4 weeks before uptitrating to 5mg for the next 4 weeks. You can then increase the dose every 4 weeks to 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg if you wish to depending on which strength you prefer.
What are the Storage Requirements for Mounjaro
Mounjaro pens should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C to 8°C. If kept refrigerated they should last until their expiry however if taken out they will still be valid at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 21 days after first use.

The Mounjaro weight loss injection contains additional excipients such as Disodium phosphate dihydrate, Propylene glycol, Phenol, Hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), Sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment), and water for injection.
Side Effects
Mounjaro side effects
Some side effects may occur when you select Mounjaro for weight loss including headache, feeling sick, being sick, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and weakness. These side effects usually settle in time. If you are experiencing long-term or significant side effects, you should contact us for advice to speak directly to your GP.

Managing the side effects of Mounjaro
There are a few steps you can take to reduce side effects of Mounjaro:
• Avoid high sugar foods such as mangos, sweets, chocolates and fizzy drinks.
• Avoid food with high fat content such as fried food, pizza, cheese, sausages and pastries.
• Keep well hydrated – make sure you drink plenty of fluids, sipping on water throughout the day is a great way.
• Eating meals in smaller portions.
• Exercising and going for short walks
